My things at school
I have been in Room 10 for 2 years. My favourite memory at LSS is going to camp last year. There was a mudslide, bowling ally, archery area, flying fox, horse riding and the confidence course. I'm looking forward to snowboarding and skiing at Intermediate because it going to be a thrilling ride down the mountain slopes. I have enjoyed the mudslide at forest lakes because you get to zip down very fast and splashing into a puddle of mud.

Why do we have sunsets?
Today in theme we were investigating why the sun makes the colours it does when it goes up and down. We did an experiment to investigate this.
Aim: To find out why the Sun makes different colours when going up and down (sunset and sunrise)
Equipment: A glass, a torch or overhead projector, a spoon, water, milk a sheet of white paper.
Method:
- Fill the glass with water and stand it in front of the white paper.
- Shine the torch through the side of the water-filled glass in the direction of the paper.
- Observe what light strikes the paper. What colour is the light?
- Add a few drops of milk to the glass and stir through ( Don't add too much milk - just enough to make the water slightly cloudy)
- Shine the torch through the side of the glass like in step 2.
- Observe what light strikes the paper, what colour is it now?
- What does this mean for us on Earth?
The water with no milk in it reflected clear onto the screen. The milky water reflected orange onto the screen.
What this means for us on Earth?
White light is a mixture of all of the colours in the spectrum. when you sine white light through a jar of milky water. The tiny milk particles scatter the blue light in all directions, and so not much of this blue light ends up striking the paper. This effect is called Rayleigh Scattering. Red light is not effected in this way. Instead it passes through the milk and can be seen as a bright orange tint on the paper behind the glass.
Rayleigh Scattering also causes Sunsets. During a sunset only the red and orange light rays get through the atmosphere directly. All blue colours are scattering by tiny particles of dust in the atmosphere. The Sun and sky therefore appear reddish orange and they light up the clouds in the same colour.

Forces
Today in theme we investigated the different forces on the Earth.
Aim: To find out why and how we stay on Earth
Equipment: Ourselves, bucket, and water.
Method:
- Fill bucket 1/2 way with water.
- Pick up bucket with dominant arm.
- Swing bucket around body like doing freestyle as fast as you can.
The water stayed in the bucket because we spun the bucket and the force kept the water at the bottom of the bucket.
How this affects us on Earth:
- The Earth is covered in water.
- The Earth is spinning on its axis.
- That is why we have gravity.

Keith Haring
In Room 10 we have been appreciating art. We have been studying Keith Haring, an American artist.
We will know we have been successful when our art:
- is covered using bright bold colours.
- has action lines.
- conveys an emotion in cartoon style.
- is eye catching.

Camp Challenges
On Wednesday the 5th of May, the year 5/6 from Lytton Street School went to Forest Lakes Camp, north of Otaki. At camp we were learning to develop self-confidence when faced with new challenges. A challenge that I overcame was special night time activity. It was a challenge because I couldn't see a thing and I was scared. Afterwards I felt good. My favourite part was the Mudsliade.
